Los Angeles Demographics
Los Angeles is a major city in California. A census done in 2000 recorded three million six hundred ninety four thousand eight hundred twenty people, one million two hundred thousand seventy-five four hundred twelve households and seven hundred thousand ninety-eight four hundred seven families that were residing in the city. This 2000 census also determined that there was a population density of seven thousand eight hundred seventy six people per square mile. The number of housing units was one million three hundred thousand thirty-seven, seven hundred six with the average density of two thousand eight hundred fifty one per square mile. As you can tell, Los Angeles is a city that is well populated and it has become a multiethnic city. There have been major new groups of Latinos and Asian immigrants in the last couple of decades. The census done in 2000 also stated that the racial distribution in Los Angeles was forty six percent white American, eleven percent African American, ten percent Asian American, twenty five percent from other races and five percent from two or more other races. The census also states that forty six percent of the population was speaking Hispanic or Latino. Forty-two percent spoke English, forty-one percent spoke Spanish. Since the 1980s, Los Angeles has been what is known as a minority-majority city.
According to the 2000 census, thirty-three percent of households had children under the age of eighteen and forty-one percent of those households were married couples. Fourteen percent of those households had a female householder with no husband present and thirty-seven percent were non-families. There were twenty eight percent of those households that were made up of single people living alone. The average household size in Los Angeles at this time could be rounded up to three and the average family size could be rounded up to four. The median age for Los Angeles at this time was thirty-two. For every one hundred females, there were ninety-nine males.
The median income for a household in Los Angeles at this time was thirty six thousand six hundred eighty seven dollars. The average income per family was thirty nine thousand nine hundred forty two dollars. Males had an average income of thirty one thousand eight hundred eighty and females and average of thirty thousand one hundred ninety seven. Per capita income at this time was twenty thousand six hundred seventy one dollars.
