Forty Percent of U.S. Citizens Feel Illegal Immigration Will Be Much Worse In 10 Years

Clearwater, Florida (PRWEB) November 29, 2005

Scooop.net, a next-generation media site based on democratic voting principles and active participation of its members, released the results of its weekly hot topic poll today regarding the nation’s view on the problem of illegal immigration, border security and terrorism. Four out of 10 Americans believe that the problem of illegal immigration will be much worse 10 years from now. Scooop.net conducted its “Hot Topic” study to gauge the level of pubic concern on the subject.

When asked about how important the issue of illegal immigration is in one’s life, 38.2% said it was an important issue which should be addressed, and an additional 23.5% said it was a vital issue.

Americans are also deeply concerned about the lack of focus that the current administration is displaying regarding illegal immigration and border security. Of those Americans surveyed by Scooop.net, 49% felt that the federal government’s response to the issue of illegal immigration was ineffective with no direction and no clear policy.

Although President Bush has accused Jim Gilchrist, co-founder of The Minutemen Project, of being a vigilante, Americans wholeheartedly disagree. One out of three people polled by Scooop.net said that Gilchrist and The Minutemen are effectively bringing attention to a problem that politicians are not solving. Another 26% of Americans believe that the Minutemen are doing some good but are not solving the problem. Only 6.4% of those surveyed agree with President Bush’s characterization of Jim Gilchrist as a vigilante.

What solution did most of those polled feel would be those most effective? One out of three agreed that we should require a national identification card for all U.S. citizens and make it illegal to employ anyone without such a card. The second most popular response to the question of what could improve the situation of illegal immigration was to dramatically beef up border patrol personnel.

Scooop.net chose the topic of illegal immigration because of the increasing concerns about this security issue, and because of Gilchrist’s congressional run in Orange County, which by all accounts is tightening. Gilchrist is running as an Independent and has charged that Republican leadership is abandoning the issue of immigration. The question remaining is whether Gilchrist can pull off a shocking upset in the same manner as the former Governor of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura, did in 1998. Additional results of this survey can be viewed by going to www.scooop.net.

Jim Gilchrist and Minutemen co-founder, Chris Simcox, will be interviewed at 12:00 pm, EST, on Thursday, the 1st of December, on Scooopradio.com. The current events talk show is broadcast by WTAN 1340, which is an AM radio station operating out of the Tampa Bay area. The radio show is also distributed on Internet radio and podcast through approximately three dozen national hubs.

Scooop.net was launched to give the public at large a voice in what news they feel is important, and to provide a platform for Americans to clearly voice their opinions about the important issues of the day. Each week a new topic is selected from the news headlines, identified and voted on by Scooop.net members.

Next week’s hot topic will revolve around the war on terrorism and whether Americans have the will to continue the fight over the next few years. Those polled will also be asked whether they feel that they are being deserted by the mainstream media and the politicians that they have elected with regard to support for the war on terrorism.

Fixing the House or Breaking the Law: The Scoop on Hiring an Illegal Maid

An illegal immigrant is a person who has crossed a national border in any manner that violates the laws of immigration. People do this for a variety of reasons. Some feel this is their way out of poverty. They come to the United States to look for work. You may come across someone like this who seems to need your help. Perhaps you are looking for an affordable way to keep your home clean. You may consider the possibility of hiring an illegal immigrant as a maid. In that scenario, it would seem that both parties have something to gain.

Is it Wrong to Hire an Illegal Immigrant Maid?

On one hand, seeing a person in a desperate situation can naturally make a person want to help. The person may be very nice and just in a bad predicament. Your job offer could help feed this person’s family. Another reason people may wish to hire an illegal immigrant as a maid is to possibly get the labor for a lower amount than they would normally pay, because an illegal immigrant will not report them for substandard pay due to having an illegal status.

On the other hand, when considering whether or not to hire an illegal immigrant maid, it is important to remember that there are consequences that can go along with offering that help. Consider the fact that if you do, you could possibly be charged with a felony.

An alternative does exist in encouraging this person to apply for the guest worker program, which, if approved, would allow an illegal immigrant to remain legally employed without the risk of deportation. The guest worker program is a way for illegal immigrants to temporarily remain in the U.S. for employment purposes. Qualifying for the guest worker program will take away the risk of deportation.

Legalities

As mentioned on FairUS.org, knowingly encouraging or harboring an illegal alien, by assisting him or her in finding work or by providing employment, is a violation of federal law. Employment is defined as any service or labor. Is a maid considered an employee? The answer is not simple. Some may consider maid services to be domestic services.

According to The Boston Globe, a border protection chief is facing criminal charges for hiring illegal immigrants as maids. Perhaps a solution for him before hiring these maids could have been to encourage the illegal immigrants to apply for the guest worker program. If they had been approved, they could have been legally employed by him.
